Optics / Mounts

Mount:

Unlike the .223 calibre JW105, the JW103 does not come with any open sights but it does come drilled and tapped with a pair of weaver bases...which in my case were terrible. They didn't even sit straight on top of the receiver.

I decided to replace them with something a little better. I took the rifle into my local gunshop and with a bit of trial and error found that Weaver 55 mounts fitted nicely. The only issue for me was that there was not enough adjustment fore/aft to allow me to position the scope far enough back so that I didn't have to "creep" along the stock cheekrest to get a full field view through the scope.

To rectify this I bought a generic 140mm length weaver-type base with a curved bottom. I found this matched the curve of the receiver exactly. This had a number of pre-drilled holes. One end had two holes perfectly matching the front holes in the receiver. I machined one hole to match the rear-most receiver hole meaning it would be mounted with three screws.

I also needed to machine out part of the mount to suit the rifle and allow clearance at the top of the ejection port. I measured 50mm from the rear and 30mm from the front and machined out the bit in between, cleaning it up with a fine file and some 400/800 grit wet and dry.

This is the rail I used only this is the 100mm one which is too short. Be sure to get the 140mm version.

Scope:

Obviously there are more choices with scopes than you can shake a stick at. To my way of thinking the scope should match the price range of the rifle... little point in putting a $1,000 scope on top of a $300 rifle. I settled on a Vector Optics 3.5-10 x 40.
